CCTV Systems for Iraqi Businesses: What to Actually Look For Before You Buy
Megapixels sell cameras; they do not decide whether you can identify a face. Here is how to specify coverage, size storage honestly, and avoid the three mistakes that make a system useless the day you need it.
The moment a CCTV system is judged is the moment something happens and someone asks for the footage. Most systems fail that test not because the cameras were cheap, but because nobody defined what each camera was supposed to achieve before it was mounted.
Start with the task, not the camera count
Surveillance standards separate what an image can be used for into levels, and each level needs a different amount of detail on target. As a working guide: detecting that a person is present needs far less resolution across the target than recognising someone you already know, which in turn needs far less than identifying a stranger from the footage alone.
That is why one 4K camera watching a whole yard often produces footage you cannot use, while a modest camera aimed at a doorway at head height gives you a usable face every time. Decide per position: is this camera for identification at a door, recognition in a corridor, or general detection over a yard? Then place and lens it for that job.
Resolution is not image quality
Sensor size, lens quality and low-light behaviour matter more than the number on the box. Two cameras with the same megapixel count can be far apart at dusk. Two things to check specifically:
- Wide dynamic range, for any camera pointed at a doorway or a window. Without it, a person walking in from bright sun becomes a silhouette — exactly the shot you needed.
- Real infrared performance at night, not a marketing IR range. Check the stated range against the distance you actually need, and avoid mounting where IR bounces off a nearby wall and washes out the frame.
Do the storage maths before you buy the recorder
Storage is the line item people guess at, then regret. The calculation is simple: bitrate per camera, times number of cameras, times recording hours per day, times retention days. Ask the supplier for the bitrate each camera will actually stream at your chosen resolution and frame rate, not a best case.
Two levers cut the number honestly. H.265 encoding roughly halves the bitrate compared with H.264 for the same picture, so confirm both cameras and recorder support it. And motion-based or event-based recording on low-traffic areas cuts storage sharply — but never on the doors and tills, where you want continuous recording.
Decide the retention period first as a business question — thirty days is a common baseline — then size the disks to it. Sizing the disks first and accepting whatever retention falls out is how you discover you only kept nine days, on the day you needed twenty.
The three mistakes we see most
- Power ignored. Count the PoE watt budget of the switch or recorder, not just the port count. Eight ports does not mean eight cameras if the total budget is exceeded, and IR at night is when consumption peaks. Then put the recorder, the switch and the critical cameras on a UPS — a system that dies during every power cut is not recording the moments that matter most.
- Cameras on the flat office network. Put them on their own VLAN. It contains their traffic, and it means a compromised camera is not sitting on the same segment as your accounting machine.
- Default passwords left in place and remote access opened carelessly. Change every credential on commissioning, keep firmware current, and prefer a controlled remote path over exposing the recorder straight to the internet.
Outdoor realities in Iraq
Heat, dust and direct sun are the environment, not the exception. Specify weather-rated housings for anything outside, add sunshades on west-facing positions, and plan for cleaning. A camera lens with a season of dust on it has quietly lost most of the detail you paid for, and nothing in the system will tell you.
A short checklist before you sign
- A position-by-position list stating the purpose of each camera: identify, recognise, or detect.
- Stated retention in days, with the storage calculation shown.
- PoE budget totalled, and UPS coverage for recorder, switch and key cameras.
- A separate VLAN for cameras and a documented remote-access method.
- Handover including credentials, a camera position drawing, and a five-minute demonstration of exporting footage — practise it before you need it.
